My take:

This book was a big deal at the time of its publication. I was already aware of the work of Dr Jeffery Martin, but this book covered his findings in a far greater depth.

In this book, Martin disproved many things that I, and my own religious community, had taken for granted. “Would an enlightened person be inherently ethical?” and many more assumptions about the benefits of religious (in my case Buddhist) practice that, when subjected to a significant number of in person interviews, proved to diverge from experienced reality.
